Algae cultivation in greenhouses: a biological filter against CO2 emissions and a source of biofuels

Researchers at the Polytechnic University of Madrid are working on an ambitious project involving single-celled algae. The aim of these studies is to discover the real possibilities of working with cultures of these organisms, which, in addition to acting as biological filters against CO2 emissions, could later serve as biofuel.

The study is part of the CENIT SOST – CO2 Project 'New Sustainable Industrial Uses of CO2'. It is a project promoted by a consortium of companies, universities, foundations and research centers.

Unfortunately, the widespread, industrial application of these technologies is not expected in the short term. There are still many factors to study and understand, both basic and applied, which require much new knowledge. Nevertheless, it is worthwhile to follow the results of this research, since the development of these crops could become an excellent business opportunity for the greenhouse sector.
