The importance of greenhouses

The importance of greenhouses

We all know that a balanced and healthy diet provides all the necessary nutrients for human growth, maintenance, and well-being, both physical and mental. Consuming a variety of fruits and vegetables helps our bodies function properly.

Vegetables offer numerous nutritional benefits and help prevent disease . They are also important for their high vitamin content. All vegetables have a high water content and are also notable for their carbohydrate and mineral content.

Despite the awareness in society about the importance of consuming fruits and vegetables , little importance is given to the origin of the products , and in fact, Spain can boast of being the second country in the world in terms of greenhouse surface area.

Of the total area, 53.800 hectares (88%) in Spain are under greenhouse cultivation, dedicated to growing staple foods such as vegetables (tomatoes, peppers, cucumbers, green beans, strawberries, melons, watermelons, eggplants, zucchini, and lettuce). However, the production of flowers (mainly carnations and roses) and ornamental plants also occupies 5% of the covered area. Bananas are the main tree crop grown under greenhouses, occupying the remaining area.

According to figures from the Ministry of Agriculture, Fisheries and Food , the main greenhouse crops in Spain are those mentioned above. Many greenhouses have two or even three growing cycles per year, generally combining autumn-winter crops (tomatoes, peppers, etc.) with spring crops (melons, watermelons, etc.). Therefore, greenhouses operate 365 days a year.

Vegetable and flower production has multiplied in recent decades thanks to greenhouse farming. A good example is the province of Almería , where intensive farming techniques have contributed to a significant improvement in the local, regional , and national economic levels.

Greenhouses are not only used for sowing and harvesting vegetables and plants for human consumption, but they are also made multiple experiments with the plants to investigate what land type it is more favorable for them, How often do they need to be watered?the diseases they can develop and how to treat them and even to see if somehow, any of those plants can help a fight algunas human diseases.

Finally, a crucial aspect of modern greenhouses is their ability to generate employment , as there will always be a need for labor to perform tasks such as regular watering, checking for and treating diseased plants, planting more plants, and monitoring temperature and humidity. In short, they are responsible for ensuring the quality of the environment and the produce.

At MSC we take care of even the smallest detail, striving for excellence in our production.
