The world's most expensive cherry is grown in greenhouses

The Lleida-based company SAT Edoa, in collaboration with Invernaderos IMA-MSC, has developed high-quality cherries with a production cycle that runs from approximately March 10th to April 20th. Thanks to their earliness and excellent quality, the 'Cherries Glamour' cherry has carved out a niche in the most demanding markets as an exclusive product, fetching prices of up to €150 per kilo.

SAT Edoa's innovation lies in its greenhouse production system, which allows the cherry trees to bloom in February and the fruit to be harvested in mid-March. This means that "Cherries Glamour" reach the market when cherries are unavailable anywhere else in the world, making them an exclusive product that commands high prices in the gourmet food sector.

The initiative was a global first and involved five years of preliminary research. The result is a fruit that is not only early-ripening but also characterized by its sweetness, optimal color, and firmness—organoleptic qualities increasingly demanded by consumers.

The initial one-hectare operation, with a greenhouse designed by IMA-MSC, presented a significant challenge for the greenhouse company due to the specific needs of the crop. However, thanks to the growing success of the cherries year after year, the trust placed in IMA-MSC has been reinforced by subsequent expansion orders. These expansions aim to meet the demand for this product in international markets. While most of the harvest is destined for the domestic market and other European countries such as Italy, England, France, Belgium, Germany, and the Netherlands, SAT Edoa aspires to reach destinations as far away as Moscow, Dubai, and Shanghai.
