The El Ejido City Council grants more than 900 greenhouse licenses free of charge

The Almería City Council has been promoting this measure since 2002, the year in which the Andalusian Regional Government established the need for farmers to process these licenses for the construction or modernization of greenhouses.

The City Council maintains that the measure aims to promote this type of work among local farmers, sparing them the extra burden of municipal taxes. They have been doing this for years to ensure El Ejido remains competitive with other towns and as a way to support farmers during this time of crisis. However, local farmers are demanding more substantial measures in light of the alarming deficiencies in garbage collection services and the maintenance of agricultural roads.

Public aid to farmers is always welcome, but in this case, it seems insufficient. Given the importance of greenhouses to El Ejido's economy, it's understandable that local producers are demanding better services. The City Council would do well to offer additional support to the extent of its resources. The loss of competitiveness among Almería's greenhouses is a problem that requires urgent action.
